What is Premium Lash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent fibers that are attached to your natural eyelashes in order to make your lash fringe look longer, fuller, and darker. Individual lash extensions are applied to each of your individual natural eyelashes (one extension per natural eyelash) using a semi-permanent glue.

How do eyelash extensions work

The first step of getting your lashes done is selecting the best eyelash shape and size according to your eye shape and desired look. Don't worry - your eyelash technician will do this for you! an experienced licensed eyelash technician will place protective pads over your lower lashes and under eyes and have you close your eyes.
Using precise tweezers, your lash artist will take a single eyelash extension, apply adhesive, and place carefully on one of your natural lashes one millimeter above the root. If you opt for volume lashes in a more glamorous, open-eyed look, the process will only differ slightly. Rather than applying just one extension to each lash, your lash artist will first glue a few synthetic lashes together to create a fan. From here, the same process as noted above will be used.

Eyelash Extension Lengths

Short Lash Extensions: 5-8 mm
These short lengths are ideal for the inner corner or very natural looks. They are also used for bottom eyelash extensions.

Medium Lash Extensions: 9-12 mm
These are the the most popular and most used eyelash extensions. They're ideal for the centre and outer corner of the eye, especially when clients have medium or short lashes.

Long Lash Extensions: 13-16 mm

This is the longest length used by most beauty salons. They're ideal for the centre and outer corners on clients with longer lashes.

Very Long Lash Extensions: 17-22 mm

These extremely long extensions should only be used on clients with very long and healthy natural lashes who like a dramatic style. Most beauty salon's don't stock these lengths. Only for special occasions/requests, these can be arranged for applications.

Ultra-Long Lash Extensions: 23-30 mm

While some retailers sell these ultra-long extensions, however they are never come in handy.

Types of eyelash extensions

Classic lash extensions
Classic lash extensions are simple, beautiful, natural-looking eyelash extensions, and a go-to choice for minimalists. They are applied on a 1:1 ratio, which means one extension is attached to one natural lash. This allows you to achieve a natural enhancement. These extensions also cause less damage to the natural lashes as they are lighter. A classic can range between 0.1mm – 0.15mm, this would mean you can achieve an open eye effect without added discomfort. They can also be applied with volume eyelash extension to give it a hybrid look. The placement of lashes will depend on the natural eyelash extension conditions and shape and can be placed to the sides, top, or bottom of the natural lashes.

Volume lash extensions
Volume lashes are the art of fanning and picking up multiple lightweight extensions at a time. They are applied on a 1:2-6 ratio (keep in mind we don't recommend more than 6d curls), which means the extension is attached to anywhere from 2 to 6 on a single lash. Volume extensions are made from synthetic fibers, which are ultra-thin and gives them smooth look and feel. The most expensive and high-quality Volume lash extensions are made using synthetic mink. These lashes are arranged in a fan shape, which gives a feel of volume and a fluffier look. A volume can range anywhere between 0.03mm - 0.07mm, which makes them lighter than classic.their superior quality also means they come with a price tag more than the classics.
Like Classic Lash Extensions, Volume lash extensions come in various sizes and qualities. A good quality lash extension holds up the shape of curls for a long, is either made up of faux mink or Korean PBT material which makes the lashes lightweight and easily removable.

8 tips for making lash extensions last longer, ahead

Choose Extensions That Mimic Your Natural Lash Shape
Always tell your esthetician to choose extensions that are similar to the shape of your eye and natural lashes. You can also ask your lash specialist for lighter-weight individual lashes around the .07 mm and .05 mm range, which will stay on longer than heavier lashes.

Avoid Water for the First 48 Hours
Once your fresh set of extensions is applied, you want to be careful to steer clear of any moisture. For longer lasting lashes, it's important that the glue sets completely. If you can, skip the eye-makeup (or keep it to a minimum) during the first 48 hours so that you won't need to wash the lashes directly.

Avoid Waterproof Eye Products
Though you don't have to wear mascara once you have extensions, sometimes you might want to add some extra drama to your look. In that case, avoid waterproof formulas at all cost-experts say they're much harder to remove and all that tugging is bad news for the life span of your lash extensions.

Use Oil-Free Cleansers
If you do still want to wear (and thus remove) eye makeup, use a mild, low-alkaline soap and to always use an oil-free makeup remover. Oil breaks downs the glue that holds up the lashes, so she encourages clients to avoid oil cleansers and makeup removers.

Switch to a Silk or Satin Pillowcase
Bad news, stomach sleepers: Sleeping with your face pushed into your pillow can cause your extensions to fall out more quickly.try to sleep on your back for ultimate eyelash extension maintenance. be sure to do so using a silk or satin pillowcase so if you do roll over, your lashes will be met with a gentler material and will be less likely to get snagged.

Brush Your Lashes
To maintain your fluttery new lashes, make sure to brush them out occasionally to avoid any kinks, clumps, or debris from sleeping.

Steer Clear of Mechanical Lash Curlers
Our eyelash curler is a holy grail tool in our makeup bags but, with lash extensions, it's best to lay off the mechanical curler.

Don't Touch Your Eye Area
Encourages clients to resist that urge to play with their lashes throughout the day or while cleansing. Not only can fiddling with the extensions pull out the false lashes, but it can also end up damaging your natural lashes. If you don't have enough extensions left to fill because you were touch-happy, your technician might charge you extra, up to the cost of a brand new set.

Steps to Take Off Your Eyelash Extensions at Home

Step 1: Get a natural oil such as coconut, sunflower seed, avocado, shea butter, or jojoba oil. "They will break the bond of the adhesive and are the safest to use at home," says Phillips.

Step 2: Using your fingertips, apply the oil to your lash line in circular motions. "If you have one, use a clean mascara wand and comb the oil through your lashes for deeper saturation," she says.

Step 3: Let the oil sit on your eyelashes for three to five minutes.

Step 4: Try to gently slide the extensions off with your fingers. "Be sure not to yank or force the extension off," she says.

Step 5: Once you've removed each individual lash, wash the area with an eye-safe cleanser to remove any oil residue.

Eyelash Extension Materials

Mink Eyelash Extensions
Once upon a time, mink eyelashes were made from real mink fur. They were very soft and lush, but they weren't great at holding a curl.very few salons still use real mink eyelash extensions and instead opt for cruelty-free faux mink.
Sometimes, the term mink is used to refer to "signature" or "classic" lash extensions (i.e. one extension per natural eyelash), rather than the material.

Faux Mink
Nowadays, faux mink are more common. They are made of a soft, heat-resistant polymer.
Faux mink lashes are usually very lush and dramatic, and they tend to hold a curl very effectively. Most importantly, they're totally vegan and cruelty-free.

Faux Silk
Faux silk lashes are also vegan and cruelty-free. They're made of a synthetic polymer, as well, but the processing is a little different.
They tend to be softer and more natural-looking than faux mink extensions, which is why they're the material we chose for Lilac St. DIY extensions.
Terminology isn't always consistent, though. The exact difference between faux silk and faux mink lashes will depend on the brand your salon carries, so always consult with your lash tech before deciding.

FAQ

Q: Can I get eyelash extensions if I have sensitive eyes?

A: Yes, but it's essential to inform your lash technician about your sensitivity beforehand. They can use hypoallergenic adhesives and adjust their techniques to ensure a comfortable experience.

Q: Are eyelash extensions damaging to my natural lashes?

A: When applied correctly by a trained professional, eyelash extensions do not cause damage to your natural lashes. It's crucial to follow proper aftercare instructions and avoid picking or pulling at the extensions.

Q: Can I wear mascara with eyelash extensions?

A: While mascara is not necessary with lash extensions, if you still want to use it, opt for a water-based and lash extension-safe mascara. Avoid oil-based or waterproof mascaras, as they can weaken the adhesive bond.

Q: How often do I need to get lash extensions filled?

A: To maintain the fullness and longevity of your lash extensions, it's recommended to get them filled every 2-3 weeks. This will ensure that any lost or grown-out lashes are replaced with fresh extensions.

Q: Can I swim or shower with eyelash extensions?

A: It's best to avoid prolonged exposure to water, such as swimming or showering, for the first 24-48 hours after getting lash extensions. Once the adhesive has fully cured, you can enjoy water activities while keeping your lashes dry and avoiding excessive rubbing.

Q: How do I remove eyelash extensions?

A: It's recommended to have a professional remove your lash extensions to prevent damage to your natural lashes. However, if you decide to remove them at home, use a specialized lash extension remover following the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Q: How many eyelash extensions are applied?

A: During a new application of eyelash extensions, an average of 60-100 individual lash extensions are applied to each eye. Keep in mind that everyone's natural lashes are unique, meaning some individuals may naturally have more or fewer lashes than others. Your technician will work with your natural lashes to create a beautifully enhanced look that suits your eye shape and personal style.

Q: How long does the application take?

A: Due to the intricate nature of the application process, it can take up to 2 hours to apply eyelash extensions. For those seeking mega volume lashes, the process may take even longer. This extended duration ensures that every lash is individually enhanced, resulting in a stunning and natural-looking outcome. Take a moment to closely examine your lashes in the mirror during your appointment, and you'll appreciate the meticulous artistry of a skilled lash technician.

Q: Can i wear makeup with eyelash extensions?

A: Yes, you can wear makeup with eyelash extensions, but it's important to choose products that are specifically formulated for use with lash extensions. Avoid oil-based or waterproof makeup, as these can weaken the adhesive bond and cause the lashes to fall out prematurely. Opt for oil-free and water-based makeup products instead, and be gentle when removing your makeup to prevent damage to the extensions.

Q: How do i choose the right eyelash extension style?

A: The right eyelash extension style depends on your personal preference and the look you want to achieve. There are various styles to choose from, including classic, hybrid, and volume lashes. Classic lashes provide a natural and subtle enhancement, while hybrid lashes offer a combination of classic and volume lashes for a slightly fuller look. Volume lashes, on the other hand, provide a more dramatic and glamorous effect. Consult with your lash technician to determine the best style for you based on your eye shape and desired outcome.

Q: Which eyelash extensions look most natural?

A: The most natural look is achieved with classic eyelash extensions, which have a 1:1 ratio and moderate length and density. For a slightly fuller look, hybrid extensions with a maximum 1:2 volume lash ratio are a good option.

Q: What is the most popular lash extension?

A: The most popular lash extension is classic individual eyelash extensions, which offer a natural look by applying synthetic lashes to your own natural ones.

Q: What are the main types of lash extensions?

A: The main types of lash extensions are classic, volume, and hybrid. Classic extensions provide a natural look, while volume extensions offer a more dramatic and fuller appearance, and hybrid extensions combine both styles for a customised look.

Q: What are infills?

A: Your lashes will Infills are the re-application of lashes in areas that may have experienced lash fall-out or gaps. They are recommended to keep your lashes looking full and fierce, avoiding looking 'gappy'.

Q: How often should I get infills?

A: As humans, we have between 90-120 natural lashes on our upper lash line. However, these will shed daily, an average of 2-5 lashes. We recommend booking an appointment for infills every 2-3 weeks.

Q: Can I wear mascara with lash extensions?

A: You don't need to wear mascara with lash extensions, as they basically act as mascara anyway. With extensions, your lashes will look fuller, darker and longer.
We recommend avoiding mascara altogether, especially with the more natural, lighter lashes as this will add weight to the lashes and give a higher risk of them falling out.

Q: What are the limitations of eyelash extensions?

A: Another potential drawback of eyelash extensions is that they can cause damage to your natural lashes. If the extensions are applied incorrectly or are too heavy for your natural lashes, they can cause breakage, thinning, and even loss of your natural lashes.

Q: What weakens eyelash extensions?

A: Certain oil-based products, such as makeup removers, cleansers, and mascaras, can weaken the adhesive used to secure lash extensions. The oil has the potential to weaken the bond between the extensions and the natural lashes, allowing them to detach more easily.

Q: What is the difference between C curl and D curl lash extensions?

A: C curl lash extensions provide a subtle and natural lift, while D curl lash extensions offer a more dramatic lift. The choice between the two depends on your desired level of curl and the effect you wish to achieve.

Q: Can I wear contact lenses with lash extensions?

A: Yes, once the lashes have been applied, you can wear contact lenses again. However, if you notice any irritation when wearing the contact lenses, we recommend getting them professionally removed as it might not be the best option for you.

Q: What are Russian Lash Extensions?

A: They are a lightweight, fluttery type of lash extension with flexible, buildable options. Russian Lashes are more voluminous than a classic set as your therapist will apply a few synthetic lashes to each of your natural lashes. Read all about them here.
